Deep Calling

Whales spouting in Glacier Bay Alaska

When my soul is downcast,
when my way seems in decline.
I’ll remember a beautiful place,
where Your deep love called to mine.

A place of water and mountains,
of raven, and eagle, and bear,
whales spouting, ice cracking, the breathing
of Your wonderful cold clear air.

A place where I gazed on Your splendor,
and knew Your great love for me.
Giving me hope in my troubles,
That one day in Your presence I’ll be.

Poem by Stephen Hufman based on Psalm 42

Drowning In Trouble

Icicle Creek cold and frothing

Icicle Creek cold and frothing

There are times I feel overwhelmed.
Lost to anything good,
Drowning in fear.
Floundering in guilt and shame for falling so low,
I drink the cup of tears, with no end.
How will I ever live again?

But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;”
Isaiah 43:1-3
